Why I Love My Job: Professional Detailing & Valeting In Beautiful Devon

Some people spend their whole lives searching for work that feels less like a chore and more like a passion. I found mine right here, in the county I’m proud to call home: Devon. As a professional detailer and valet, every single day I get to combine two things I love – caring for cars, and working in one of the most stunning, varied and special places in the UK. From windswept moorland lanes to sun-drenched coastal villages, every job is different, and every one leaves me thinking: I really do have the best job in the world.

Working In One Of The Most Beautiful Places On Earth

First and foremost, my workplace is my biggest perk. I don’t sit in a stuffy office or a grey warehouse – I work in driveways, farmyards, garages and lanes all across this incredible county. I’ve set up my equipment overlooking the bobbing yachts in Dartmouth harbour, spent the day detailing a classic Land Rover outside a 400-year-old thatched cottage deep on Dartmoor, and polished family cars in driveways with views right out to the sea at Brixham or Exmouth. Even on the rainy, blustery days we’re famous for, there’s something magical about breathing in that fresh, clean air, with the smell of gorse or sea salt on the breeze.

Devon is also the perfect place for my line of work, because we have such an amazing mix of cars here. There’s no ‘one type’ of vehicle on our roads:

• I work with farmers’ Defenders and 4x4s that have been driven up to their axles in moorland mud and farm slurry

• I look after cherished classic cars, from vintage MG’s to gleaming Jaguars, that owners bring down to enjoy on our quiet, winding country lanes

• I valet modern SUVs and family cars that spend their weeks ferrying kids, dogs, beach gear and holiday luggage

• I even prepare luxury wedding cars and vintage show vehicles, making sure they look perfect for their big moment

Best of all, Devon’s unique environment means my work is never just about making cars look shiny – it’s about protecting them. Our cars face some of the harshest conditions in the country right here: salt spray blowing off the coast all year round, grit and road salt covering our roads in winter, sticky tree sap from our ancient woodlands, thick red clay mud, and even agricultural chemicals splashed up from farm tracks. That’s why services like full wheel arch deep cleans, engine bay restoration and headlight matter so much here. When I dig years of compacted salt and grit out of a wheel arch, or restore a faded engine bay, I’m not just tidying up – I’m stopping rust, preventing expensive damage, and saving my customers hundreds or even thousands of pounds in repair bills. There’s so much purpose in that.

The Joy Of Transformation: Turning ‘Worn’ Into ‘Wonderful’

At the heart of this job is one thing I will never get tired of: the before and after. If you’ve read my other guides, you’ll know I’m obsessed with the details – and that’s because the details are what change everything.

I’ve lost count of the number of cars I’ve worked on where the owner has said, “Oh, it’s just a workhorse, it’s always going to be messy” or “I didn’t think it could ever look good again”. Then we get to work.

I’ve spent hours deep cleaning engine bays caked in 10 years of oil, grease and road grime, bringing them back to a tidy, protected state that looks almost factory-new. I’ve polished cloudy, yellowed headlights that were so dim they were dangerous to drive at night, restoring them to crystal clear and saving customers £500+ on replacement units. I’ve shampooed interiors that were covered in everything from wet dog hair and sand to farm debris and food spills, leaving them fresh, sanitised and safe for families. I’ve removed swirl marks and dullness from paintwork, turning faded, tired-looking panels into glossy, mirror-like finishes.

The absolute best part? The reaction. There is no better feeling than watching someone walk slowly around their car after a full detail, running their hand over the shiny paint, peering under the bonnet in surprise, or looking at their headlights and saying, “I honestly didn’t think it would ever look this good”. It’s not just a clean car – it’s giving someone back their pride and joy, or making their daily drive that little bit nicer. That feeling never gets old.

The Devon Community Makes It All Worthwhile

Devon is famous for being friendly, welcoming and close-knit – and that is easily my favourite part of this job. My customers aren’t just names on a booking list; they’re neighbours, friends, and people I see year after year.

I’ve had customers invite me in for a hot cup of tea mid-job, bring me cake on a cold winter’s day, share stories about their cars, and recommend me to every single person they know. I work with local garages, wedding car companies, classic car clubs and family-run farm businesses, and every relationship is built on trust. When someone lets me work on their car – whether it’s a £50,000 classic Porsche, an old Defender that’s been in the family for 20 years, or the people carrier that carries their kids and dogs everywhere – they’re trusting me with something that matters to them. That trust means everything to me, and I work hard to earn it every single day.

There’s something really special about being part of this community, too. I get to help people get their cars ready for summer holidays, for big family events, for selling, or just to enjoy. Getting a car detailed isn’t just a job to most people – it’s a treat, a way to look after their investment, or something they do to make life a little nicer. Being part of those small, happy moments is a privilege I never take for granted.

No Two Days Are Ever The Same

I think that’s the biggest reason I never get bored: I never know exactly what the day will bring. On Monday I might be up on Dartmoor, deep cleaning a Land Rover that’s been out checking livestock in the rain. On Tuesday I could be down in Salcombe, polishing a luxury 4x4 ready for a week away by the sea. On Wednesday I might be restoring headlights and cleaning an engine bay on a family car in Torquay, and on Thursday I could be working on a vintage classic, getting it ready for a local show.

Yes, it’s hard work. It’s physical, it takes patience, and it requires a level of care and attention that some people might find tiring. But to me, it’s the best kind of work. I don’t sit behind a desk, I don’t repeat the same routine day in, day out, and I work outdoors, surrounded by fresh air and beautiful views. I get to use my hands, my knowledge and my passion to make a real difference, every single day.

My Perfect Job

People often ask me “What’s the best part of your job?” and I always say the same thing: it’s everything. It’s the cars, the transformations, the people, and above all, being able to do it all right here in Devon.

This county isn’t just a place to work – it’s part of what makes my job so special. Every mud-splattered 4x4, every sea-sprayed family car, every cherished classic, and every friendly customer is part of the story. Professional detailing isn’t just cleaning cars to me – it’s looking after the things that matter to people, in the place that matters most to me.

I really do have the best job in the world, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

If your car has been battling Devon’s salt air, mud or weather, or you just want to fall in love with your car all over again, get in touch – I’d love to help.
